Nepal Government Working to Maintain Peace and Security: Home Minister

Nepal’s Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has stated that the government is actively working to maintain peace and security in the country.

Responding to queries from lawmakers during a meeting of the National Assembly, Minister Gurung said that the Home Ministry is taking necessary steps to ensure peace and security in the country.

He also emphasized the need for lawmakers to be sensitive when raising sensitive issues, saying that repeatedly discussing a sensitive topic can cause distress to the affected families.

Minister Gurung declined to comment on an ongoing investigation, stating that it would be inappropriate to make any statements at this time.

He also requested lawmakers not to repeatedly raise the issue in the National Assembly and the House of Representatives, but added that he is open to personal queries on the matter.

Lawmaker Vishnubahadur Vishwakarma expressed his concern that the minister’s statement had undermined his parliamentary rights, but Minister Gurung clarified that it is a natural process in parliamentary practice for lawmakers to ask questions and for ministers to respond.

In a separate context, Minister Gurung stressed the need for coordination between the federal, provincial, and local governments to address mental health issues.

He said that the country has experienced many ups and downs, and therefore, all three levels of government are working together to develop plans related to mental health.

He also mentioned that efforts are being made to prevent suicide through the 1166 helpline.
