Nepal’s first cable car, the Manakamana Cable Car, will be closed for maintenance and upgrades for approximately 50 days starting July 15th. The closure is necessary to modernize the cable car’s digital system with fiber optic technology.

Ujjwal Sherchan, Deputy General Manager of Manakamana Darshan Pvt Ltd, the cable car company, announced the upgrade. The current “analog” technology will be replaced with a modern digital system, and the main cable wire will also be replaced after 26 years of operation.

Skilled technicians from Doppelmayr, an Austrian company, will be brought in for the upgrade project.

The Manakamana Cable Car has operated since November 24, 1998, providing a convenient way for pilgrims to reach the famous Mankamana Temple in Gorkha.

While the cable car service will be unavailable, the restaurant at the bottom station in Ichhakamana-4, Chitwan, will remain open for visitors.
