A volunteer police officer has been immediately dismissed from the West Mercia Police force after an internal disciplinary panel concluded he deliberately stole three plastic carrier bags from a supermarket, according to British press reports. Special Constable Luke Hodgson was found to have committed gross misconduct by intentionally avoiding a total payment of £1.20 whilst using self-service checkouts at a Sainsbury’s store where he was also employed.
The accelerated misconduct hearing highlights the strict zero-tolerance approach law enforcement agencies are applying to any criminal behaviour that compromises an officer’s integrity, regardless of the financial value involved.
Luke Hodgson Misconduct Hearing: What Led To The Misconduct Investigation?
The disciplinary proceedings against the special constable originated from an internal investigation conducted by his civilian employer, Sainsbury’s, in December 2025. Store management reviewed self-service checkout records and discovered that on three separate occasions over a twelve-day period, Hodgson had bypassed the mandatory till prompt requesting payment for plastic carrier bags, which cost 40 pence each. Following the discovery of the unpaid items, the supermarket dismissed him for gross misconduct.
