Katie Zacharia bid farewell to the White House on Friday after spending just five days as press secretary, ending a short and controversial tenure in the Trump administration. Her departure followed a difficult first press briefing and growing questions about her qualifications to practise law in the United States.

In her farewell message, Zacharia praised US President Donald Trump and described working for his administration as an honour. Her exit came after a week of intense scrutiny over her performance, professional background and public statements.

“President Trump is a kind, wonderful, gracious, thoughtful, enthusiastic, and hardworking man. I wish more Americans appreciated him. No one will ever make America great the way he has and continues to. It was an honour to work for him,” she said.

Reports on Friday indicated that Zacharia had been removed from the position. The New York Times, citing three people familiar with the matter, reported that she had been dismissed. A White House official also confirmed her departure to AFP.

Later, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said Zacharia would be “transitioning into a new role that will be announced at a later date.”

Zacharia’s departure marked an unusual setback for the Trump administration. Her five-day tenure made her the shortest-serving White House press secretary in the position’s history. She had also not moved to Washington after accepting the job.
