The Houston Astros are moving on from Joe Espada after three seasons as manager, ending his tenure despite two American League West titles and a winning regular season record.
The decision, reported Wednesday, October 14, leaves Houston searching for a new manager after another early postseason exit.
Espada went 256 and 229 during his three seasons, but the Astros failed to win a playoff game under his leadership.

Houston’s decision is particularly striking because Espada guided the club to division titles in 2024 and 2026.
Yet neither postseason appearance produced a series victory, with the Astros swept by Detroit in 2024 and Chicago in 2026.
Why Did The Astros Move On From Joe Espada?
The postseason record is the clearest explanation for why Espada’s future became uncertain. Houston went 0 and 4 in playoff games during his managerial tenure, losing both wild card series in straight games.
But the 2026 season exposed problems that extended beyond the manager’s performance.
Houston finished 81 and 81, becoming the first team in MLB history to win a division title with a .500 record over a full season.
