Australia’s women’s rugby league team, the Jillaroos, faced criticism on social media after some players appeared not to sing the national anthem before their 40-0 victory over Fetu Samoa in the Women’s Rugby League World Cup 2026 opener at CommBank Stadium in Sydney on Friday, October 16. The pre-match footage sparked a debate about national pride, unity and what it means to represent Australia, with some fans questioning the players’ decision to remain silent during ‘Advance Australia Fair’.
One social media user criticised the players, writing: “Can someone tell Australian athletes how important it is to all sing the National Anthem, so we’re all one, together, as a country, united, not divided…”
The debate unfolded against the backdrop of a dominant performance from the Jillaroos, who began their World Cup campaign with a seven-try victory over Samoa.
