South African rugby club Lions are trying to come to terms with the death of lock Hyron Andrews while preparing for their upcoming United Rugby Championship fixtures in Scotland. The 31-year-old died last Friday during the team’s European tour, a day before the Lions faced La Rochelle in the European Champions Cup.
Despite the emotional toll of losing a teammate, the Lions decided to play against La Rochelle in his honour. They are now preparing to face Edinburgh at Hive Stadium on Friday, followed by a match against Glasgow Warriors next weekend.
Assistant coach Julian Redelinghuys has acknowledged the difficulty of continuing the tour while players are still processing the sudden loss. He said the support received from the wider rugby community had been significant during an exceptionally difficult period.
