The much-hyped Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar failed to translate its extensive social media mobilisation into a visible show of strength at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, as the Delhi Police mounted a sweeping security operation to prevent protesters from assembling at the designated protest site.
With a multi-layered security grid, barricades, cemented barriers and road closures, the police maintained a tight grip over key access points across the New Delhi district. Thousands of personnel were deployed, protesters were detained at multiple locations, and access to sensitive areas was restricted, preventing the gathering from turning into the large-scale demonstration that had been projected online.
The protest drew its strongest organisational support from Left-wing parties and their affiliated student organisations that actively backed the mobilisation against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. However, despite the campaign’s visibility on social media, the demonstration failed to translate into a substantial gathering of students at Jantar Mantar. The participation of student groups did not result in a broad-based student mobilisation, with the protest largely remaining confined to political activists and party-backed organisations.

Left-wing youth leader Neha Bora was detained by Delhi Police while protesting on the ground, as security personnel moved to disperse demonstrators and prevent them from converging at the designated protest site.
The police action extended beyond Jantar Mantar, with protesters detained near Connaught Place, Akashvani Bhawan, Lodhi Estate and South Extension. According to police officials, more than 3,000 protesters were detained in different parts of the New Delhi district, while other accounts put the number of people detained during the operation at over 4,000. Several political workers, activists and YouTubers were among those taken into custody. But by Saturday night, Delhi Police said that it had released all protesters except for the CJP leadership.
The protest had been denied permission by the authorities, who had put extensive arrangements in place to prevent a breach of law and order. The deployment reflected the police’s determination to avoid a large crowd gathering in central Delhi, particularly around Jantar Mantar and adjoining high-security zones.

The Delhi Police sealed off access routes to the protest area using multiple layers of barricades, large cement blocks and buses positioned to block roads. Security personnel were stationed at strategic points to intercept groups attempting to move towards Jantar Mantar.
