FIFA president Gianni Infantino is facing renewed questions over financial transparency after US tax records reportedly revealed a previously undisclosed payment of $1.72 million linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The compensation, received in 2024, was separate from the salary and benefits he earned from football’s global governing body that year.
According to documents obtained by ESPN from FIFA and the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the payment came from FWC2026, the US-based organisation established by FIFA to manage and operate the tournament in North America. The report has raised questions about why the additional compensation did not appear in FIFA’s 2024 annual report and whether the disclosure met the organisation’s own transparency requirements.
FIFA has rejected suggestions that it violated its statutes, maintaining that its compensation arrangements comply with applicable reporting rules.

What Do the US Tax Records Reveal About Infantino’s Payment?
According to the ESPN report published on Tuesday, IRS records show that Infantino received $1,724,393 from FWC2026 in 2024.
The payment was made in connection with the organisation responsible for managing and operating the 2026 World Cup, which took place across North America this summer.
Infantino had already received approximately $4.9 million in salary and benefits from FIFA for 2024. The additional payment from FWC2026 was separate from that compensation and, according to the report, was not disclosed in FIFA’s annual report for the same year.
The reported omission has brought the governing body’s financial disclosure practices into focus, particularly given its rules on publishing the compensation of senior officials.
