Police detained two former Chief Ministers, Pinarayi Vijayan and Mamata Banerjee, who joined the youth groups’ protests in Delhi on Saturday (October 10, 2026) in a show of solidarity.

Mr. Vijayan, the former Keralam Chief Minister, was picked up from Kerala House, close to Jantar Mantar. Former West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Banerjee was picked up from the South Avenue bus stand, right in front of the flats allotted to parliamentarians.

Jantar Mantar march

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) leadership managed to take the police by surprise after staying overnight at Kerala House, which is just a few metres from Jantar Mantar — a location that the police sought to make completely out of bounds for protesters. Party leaders, including general secretary M.A. Baby and senior leaders Brinda Karat, John Brittas, K.N. Balagopal, K.K. Shailaja, P. Sivadasan, and P. Rajeeve, marched out of Kerala House towards Jantar Mantar, shouting slogans. They were detained immediately by the police.
