Mercedes’ George Russell set the pace in the only practice session for the Singapore Grand Prix 2026 on Friday, clocking the fastest lap at Marina Bay as Formula One teams prepared for the weekend’s first sprint qualifying session. The Briton topped the timesheets with a 1:32.274, edging Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.198 seconds, while reigning world champion Lando Norris finished third.
Russell’s strong start comes after a frustrating end to his Malaysian Grand Prix last weekend, where an engine failure forced him to retire just five laps before the finish. The Mercedes driver now faces another challenge in Singapore, as a power unit penalty is set to send him to the back of the grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix, despite his victory from pole position at the circuit last year.
