The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] will launch a major public agitation against the Keralam government for the latter’s alleged failure to address the concerns of residents of hill regions over the notification of Ecologically Sensitive Areas (ESA) in Kannur district.
Protests will be held continuously after October 25, focussing on Kottiyoor, Cheruvanchery and Aralam regions, CPI(M) district secretary K.K. Ragesh said.
Mr. Ragesh alleged that the State government had remained indifferent to the concerns of people living in the hilly areas of the district, while the Centre continued to refuse to accept the revised report submitted by the State on ESA boundaries.
The ESA notification introduced by the United Democratic Front (UDF) government in 2014 had caused extremely serious consequences for the hilly regions of the district. A ground-level survey was necessary to identify the actual ESA areas, he said.
