Spoiler alert: This article contains major spoilers for Chicago Fire Season 15 Episode 1.

Chicago Fire Season 15 wastes no time answering the biggest question from the Season 14 finale: everyone from Firehouse 51 survives the warehouse fire. But that does not mean everyone gets out unscathed. Joe Cruz is the one who pays the biggest price.

After staying behind to rescue trapped civilians, Cruz is crushed by falling debris and suffers a serious spinal injury. Three months later, he is still in the hospital and unable to walk. And the ending delivers an even more devastating blow. Cruz learns that even if he eventually walks again, he will not be able to return to firefighting.

Here’s what happened to Cruz and what the Chicago Fire Season 15 premiere ending means for his future at Firehouse 51.

What Happened To Cruz In Chicago Fire Season 15 Episode 1?

The Season 15 premiere picks up directly from the warehouse fire that ended Season 14. As the firefighters try to escape, Cruz hears people trapped behind a wall. He refuses to leave them. Cruz breaks through the wall and manages to help rescue several civilians. But when he goes back for the final two people, the structure becomes unstable. A ceiling beam collapses and lands on him.

Herrmann immediately calls a mayday as the rest of 51 tries to get Cruz out. The rescue succeeds, but Cruz is badly injured. The episode then jumps forward three months. Cruz is still recovering in hospital, using a wheelchair and struggling with the possibility that his life as he knew it may be over.

The injury is particularly devastating because firefighting is not simply Cruz’s job. It is a huge part of his identity. And that is exactly what makes his Season 15 storyline so painful.

Is Cruz Paralysed?

Yes, Cruz is left with a severe spinal injury that currently prevents him from walking. The premiere reveals that his spinal cord was fractured in the warehouse collapse. His MRI results are particularly grim.
