The cage-trapping of a black panther cub near Kulathumon in Kalanjoor panchayat, Pathanamthitta, on Friday (October 9, 2026) has raised concern among wildlife conservationists, who fear that it could be permanently kept in captivity and not released to the wild.

It was probably for the first time that a black panther was caged in Keralam, according to forest officials.

The cub, aged around two, had walked into one of the two cages set in the area, which has a history of human-wildlife conflicts involving leopards. Besides the several instances of dognapping, the presence of leopards was confirmed by several CCTV images and multiple pug marks. Direct sightings were also reported at various locations of the panchayat, according to an official document.
