Over a month into the apocalyptic Bhotekoshi flood, Nepal has embarked on a recovery drive to restore services and rebuild the lives and livelihoods of the affected people. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has invited proposals from partner organisations willing to construct transitional shelters for families displaced by the flood in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts in compliance with Urban Development and Building Construction standards. The call for proposals comes as the government has begun shifting its focus from emergency response to recovery and rehabilitation.
As of October 5, 1085 displaced people were still staying in 17 holding centres. Indeed, for such people, there is an overwhelming need for transitional accommodation. The government has also decided to construct transitional shelters at potentially safe sites identified for the purpose and mobilise partner organisations to support the work. A government committee under the Ministry of Infrastructure Development has identified 277 plots covering 3,270 ropanis in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading for possible resettlement. It has recommended developing integrated settlements with basic infrastructure and services, including roads, drinking water, sanitation, electricity, schools, health facilities and communications.
