A significant milestone has been reached in the construction of the 140-megawatt Tanahu hydropower project. The main tunnel, designed to channel water from the Seti River, has been successfully excavated. Energy Secretary Gopal Prasad Sigdel and Nepal Electricity Authority Executive Director Kulman Ghising marked the event by detonating explosives for the tunnel’s breakthrough.
The 1,493-meter tunnel will now undergo concrete lining. Water flowing through the tunnel and a 213-meter penstock pipe will generate electricity in an underground power plant.
During the breakthrough ceremony, Secretary Sigdel praised the project’s progress and urged the timely completion of the main dam. Executive Director Ghising emphasized the project’s critical role in balancing electricity supply during dry seasons and announced plans for the Lower Seti Hydropower Project.
The overall progress of the project, divided into three construction packages, stands at 54%.
