Brandon Aiyuk was supposed to be a cornerstone of the San Francisco 49ers’ offense.

Instead, the former All-Pro receiver finds himself caught in a contract standoff, with $27 million in guaranteed money wiped out and his NFL future uncertain.

The biggest twist? The 49ers can afford to wait, while Aiyuk wants a way out.

That imbalance has turned what began as a lucrative contract extension into one of the NFL’s most unusual player-team disputes.

How a $120 Million Contract Fell Apart

Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million extension in August 2024 after a prolonged contract dispute that included a trade request and a failed potential move to Pittsburgh.

At the time, the deal appeared to secure his future in San Francisco.

His 2023 season had delivered 1,342 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, establishing him as one of the league’s most productive young receivers.

But the partnership deteriorated quickly.

Aiyuk played only seven games in 2024 before suffering a serious right-knee injury involving multiple ligaments.

He missed the entire 2025 season, and disagreements over his rehabilitation and participation in team activities deepened the rift.

Why Did the 49ers Void $27 Million?

In November 2025, the 49ers confirmed they had voided the guarantees attached to Aiyuk’s 2026 compensation.
