Albania Protests Latest News: Tirana’s streets have become the centre of a growing political crisis, with student anger over university conditions, high tuition fees and alleged corruption turning into days of violent confrontations. On Sunday, October 18, Albanian police used tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets as demonstrations entered their sixth day, while protesters continued to demand Prime Minister Edi Rama’s resignation.

Albania’s Health Ministry reported 28 injuries during Sunday’s clashes, taking the reported total since Tuesday to 272, including 169 police officers. Rama has refused to step down, while the United States has called for restraint and the European Commission has urged dialogue and a proportionate response.

Some demonstrators threw stones, petrol bombs and fireworks at police officers. Protesters also set rubbish bins on fire and damaged buildings, including the headquarters of the governing Socialist Party. Fires were reported at a police station and near the entrance to the Interior Ministry, while emergency crews moved through affected areas to assist injured people.

Police responded with tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets. Albert Nushi, an official in the police public security department, said the attack on a police station had put officers and people in custody at risk. He urged peaceful protesters to distance themselves from individuals involved in violent attacks.

The unrest has damaged public buildings and businesses, while local workers took steps to reduce further violence by removing paving stones that protesters could use as projectiles.
