A27 Traffic Latest Update Today (October 15): Commuters across Sussex faced a difficult journey on Thursday, October 15, as an overturned HGV on the A27, temporary traffic lights near Polegate and several ongoing road closures disrupted key routes. Drivers reported queues of nearly four miles on the A27 Lewes Road, while a separate collision near Worthing added to congestion in West Sussex.

Long Furlong also remained affected by repairs following a burst water main, and Stockbridge Road in Chichester stayed closed for gas-main replacement work. National Highways urged motorists affected by the A27 incident to plan and follow the signed diversion.

A27 Traffic Today: A27 Crash and Roadworks Cause Delays

The A27 was among the main trouble spots after an overturned refuse truck forced the eastbound carriageway to close between the A284 Crossbush junction and the A280 near Clapham. National Highways said the crash, which happened shortly after 4 am, damaged the central reservation barrier and contaminated the road surface with the vehicle’s contents, oil and fuel.

Sussex Police, West Sussex Fire and Rescue and National Highways contractors attended the scene. Crews worked to clear the carriageway and address the damage before traffic could safely return to the affected stretch.

National Highways wrote on X, saying: “The A27 eastbound between A284 Crossbush and A280 Clapham remains closed for carriageway clear up. The road surface requires immediate attention due to contamination from the vehicle’s contents, oil and fuel.”

The closure affected a route used by motorists travelling to and from Portsmouth and prompted authorities to advise drivers to allow extra time or consider delaying their journeys.

A27 Traffic Today: What Happened?

Motorists near Polegate faced lengthy delays because of temporary traffic lights on the A27 Lewes Road at Gainsborough Lane. AA Traffic News reported delays of up to 30 minutes, with congestion extending nearly four miles back along the Polegate Bypass and more than a mile along Eastbourne Road.

An AA Traffic News alert reads: “Long delays on A27 Lewes Road Both ways at Gainsborough Lane. Congestion to Wilmington eastbound (two miles), nearly four miles back on the Polegate Bypass, and a mile and a half down Eastbourne Road. In the roadworks area. Temporary lights until the end of November.”

The temporary signals are linked to electrical works, with a permit listed as active until November 30. Drivers using the route should allow additional time, particularly during busy commuting periods.

A27 Traffic Today: Falmer and Saltdean Delays

Drivers in other parts of East Sussex also faced slower journeys. On the B2123 The Drove northbound in Falmer, delays of around 12 minutes were reported between Millyard Crescent and the A27 Brighton Road junction.

In Saltdean, traffic on the A259 Marine Drive westbound faced delays of about eight minutes, with congestion increasing. Motorists travelling through these areas were advised to check traffic conditions before setting off.
