Kathmandu: A disturbing video has surfaced online showing Kathmandu city police officers brutally assaulting a tea seller sitting on the roadside.
The video, which has gone viral on social media, depicts several police officers forcefully trying to drag the man into a van. The victim can be heard pleading for mercy, shouting “Aiya! Aiya!”
According to social media users, the incident occurred in front of Gangalal Cardiovascular Hospital in Bansbari. The tea seller was allegedly targeted by the police for selling his wares on the sidewalk.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City Police Chief Rajunath Pandey expressed his inability to understand the incident. “I watched the video, but I’m not sure what happened,” he said. “I need to investigate and find out who was on duty at the time.”
This is not the first time Kathmandu city police have faced criticism for their aggressive tactics against street vendors. In the past, videos showed police officers mistreating mango sellers, corn grinders, and tea sellers.
Following these incidents, some citizens have even protested against Mayor Balen Shah, accusing him of allowing the police to use excessive force.
