The United States is expected to make new restrictions regarding Chinese telecom companies. The companies will not have access to American phone numbers due to national security concerns. The measures have been taken in order to improve the security in case of fraud or any abuse of the US telecom network.

According to a recent report by US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the votes for the proposal will be held on November 19, 2026, to deny access to US phone numbers to China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom and other IP enabled service providers. There is increasing concern in Washington DC regarding the security threats of American telecoms access to Chinese companies.

Why Does The US Want To Restrict Chinese Telecom Firms?

Some of the reasons why this regulation has been put forth include the possible dangers of scamming calls and illegal robocalls. This is because according to FCC, limiting the access to US phone numbers could prevent any criminal activities that could arise as a result of the exploitation of US telecommunications infrastructure in conducting business.

These new rules seek to limit the access of US phone numbers by VoIP providers, which are providers of Voice over Internet Protocol. The technology converts voice signals to digital signals and transfers them through broadband internet network.

Access to the US phone number would give the providers an efficient and cheap means of offering their services, but it would also give them the chance of offering advanced communication services. Nevertheless, the FCC feels that limitation on the use of such access could be used as a means of ensuring the safety of the nation against robocalls.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr believes that the regulation will help in avoiding fraudulent calls in the nation. As the chairman says: “As we take this step today, we will be strengthening our first line of defense against bad actors and illegal robocallers,” FCC Chairman Brendan Carr.
