The United Nations has lauded Nepal’s recent legislative progress in addressing the country’s past conflicts. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has praised the passage of the Transitional Justice Bill by both houses of the Nepali parliament.
Türk emphasized the importance of this bill in providing a framework for investigating disappearances and completing the remaining steps of the peace process through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He stressed that the implementation of the bill should prioritize the needs and perspectives of the victims of Nepal’s past conflicts.
“This is a significant milestone in Nepal’s journey towards lasting peace,” Türk said in a statement. “Eight years after the peace agreement, the passage of this bill offers hope for closure and justice for the victims.”
The UN official expressed optimism that the appointment of independent members to both commissions will be conducted transparently, ensuring their credibility and effectiveness. He also noted that Nepal has set a positive example for other countries in the region and internationally by making significant strides in its peace process.
The UN has pledged its continued support to the Nepali government as it moves forward with the implementation of the Transitional Justice Bill. The organization is ready to provide technical assistance and expertise to ensure that the process is inclusive, fair, and effective.
This development is a major step forward in Nepal’s efforts to address the legacy of its past conflicts and build a more just and peaceful future.
