A patient at BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital tragically died after receiving a tenfold overdose of chemotherapy. The incident has led to the suspension of two nurses and warnings issued to 23 staff members, including two doctors.
The deceased, 50-year-old Bhaktaraj Gurung from Lamjung, was undergoing treatment for skin cancer. A fatal error occurred when he was administered 34 milligrams of chemotherapy, far exceeding the prescribed dosage. Despite receiving three previous treatments with the correct dosage, Gurung’s body was unable to tolerate the overdose and succumbed to its effects on the night of June 13th.
An investigation committee formed by the hospital found evidence of negligence in the patient’s care. Nurses Prabha Tamang and Akriti Shrestha were subsequently suspended, while 23 other staff members, including two doctors, are required to provide explanations.
Hospital authorities have expressed deep regret over the incident and pledged to implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
