EVO is one of the biggest events in the video game industry. Year after year, users gather in Las Vegas to find out who is the best at fighting games. In this way, the list of titles for the 2025 edition was recently revealed, where Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is once again conspicuous by its absence.
Recently, EVO organizers finally shared the list of main games for this year’s edition. Here we find:
Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves (first EVO appearance) Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising (second EVO appearance) Guilty Gear: Strive (fourth EVO appearance) Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes (10th EVO appearance) Mortal Kombat 1 (2nd EVO appearance) Street Fighter 6 (3rd EVO appearance) Tekken 8 (2nd EVO appearance) Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes (2nd appearance at EVO)
Likewise, the games that are part of the additional lineup, which will grow as we get closer to this year’s event, so far are:
BlazBlue: Central Fiction
Killer Instinct
The King of Fighters XV
Rivals of Aether II
Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O.
Notably, the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate name is absent. This is not the first year in which this has happened, since the last time the Nintendo title was part of EVO was in 2019. Although at the moment the reason behind this decision is unknown for sure, there are two theories at the moment. regard.
The first points out that Nintendo is asking for high compensation for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to be part of EVO, something that the organizers have decided not to pay. Likewise, it has been noted that since Sony acquired EVO, the Big N has not wanted to be associated with this event. Regardless of the reason, everything indicates that Nintendo is the one who has the final say in this matter.
We can only wait to see if the next installment in Super Smash Bros. is part of this great event. We remind you that EVO 2025 will take place between August 1 and 3 in Las Vegas. On related topics, here you can see the new trailer for the next Virtua Fighter. Likewise, they cancel League of Legends Smash-style game.
Author’s Note:
Considering that fighting games live by their community, and that Super Smash Bros. has a healthy fanbase, it’s still strange that we won’t see Ultimate at EVO. At the end of the day, it seems like Nintendo still doesn’t understand how these events work, and only hurts the community in the process.
