The German Super Cup will be called the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup starting next season, as announced by the German Football Federation (DFB) in a statement.
“Franz would have liked to see the match between the German champion and the German Cup winner named after him. Also because of the fact that he won both competitions several times,” said the widow of the German soccer idol, Heidi Beckenbauer.

Heidi Beckenbauer also thanked DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and German Football League (DFL) president Hans Joachim Watzke for the decision.
Neuendorf, for his part, said that for him personally and for the DFB it was important to honor Beckenbauer’s memory: “What he achieved for football is something incomparable and unforgettable. By giving his name to the Super Cup we created a link between Franz Beckenbauer and all football. Not only with the professionals but also with the amateurs who participate in the German Cup”.

Watzke, for his part, recalled that Beckenbauer had been “a son of the Bundesliga” and added that the super cup now bore his name.
Beckenbauer was a world champion as a coach and as a player with Germany and was also president of the 2006 World Cup organizing committee.
