Innistrad Remastered is the new Magic: The Gathering set that brings players back to the gothic and dark fantasy-themed plane of Innistrad, celebrating iconic cards and mechanics players love (or hate). Of the many legendary creatures included in the set, a few stand out as excellent options for the Commander format, also known as EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander). Today we analyze the five best legendary creatures of this expansion, ideal for guiding your decks!
We start our list with a small preview of what in our opinion is undoubtedly the most sensational reissue. We are obviously talking about Edgar Markov! Anyone who plays commander has heard of this legendary creature at least once, the dream of every Vampire player. Edgar until now had only been printed once in Vampiric Bloodlust, a Commander precon released in 2017 (the same year the Ur-Dragon was released) which had now reached really high prices. Speaking of Edgar Markov we cannot fail to mention his iconic ability, namely Preeminence, an ability that appears on a commander for the first time with him.

Edgar Markov
Colors: Mardu (White, Black, Red) Key Abilities: Prominence, Vampire token generation Traits: Aggression
Among the most iconic Commanders of all time, Edgar Markov is a symbol of the typical Vampires. His “Prominence” ability makes him unique: even when Edgar is comfortably seated on his throne in the commander zone, every time you cast a Vampire spell, you create a 1/1 Vampire token with haste. This mechanic allows you to quickly develop your board without having to invest too many resources, allowing the deck to be incredibly aggressive.
When Edgar enters the battlefield, he becomes an even greater threat: a 4/4 with haste and first strike that can buff your Vampire army every time it attacks with a +1 +1 counter, making your army unstoppable.
Strategy in deck building
An Edgar Markov deck focuses on aggression and tribal synergies. Cards like Drana, Liberator of Malakir can increase the strength of your army, while tools like Vanquisher’s Banner and Shared Animosity help you close the game quickly.
Archangel Avacyn
Colors: White (front), Red (back) Key Abilities: Army Protection, Features: Devastating Transformation.
The iconic Avacyn represents both protection and destruction. Thanks to its flash ability, it can come into play unexpectedly, making all your creatures indestructible and saving them from mass removal like Wrath of God. However, his more intriguing side emerges when he transforms into Avacyn, the Purifier. After another creature dies, it transforms, dealing 3 damage to each creature and each opponent, meaning possible boardwipes every time you transform the MTG community’s favorite angel.
Strategy in deck building
A deck with Archangel Avacyn as Commander can leverage sacrifice strategies to get the most benefit. Cards like Cleric Class or Sun Titan help you maintain control on the field, while creatures like Selfless Spirit can trigger the transformation to your advantage.
Odric, Lunarch Marshal
Color: White Key Skills: Sharing Key Skills. Characteristics: An almost immovable commander.
Odric is a brilliant choice for players who love creature synergies. Its ability allows you to share abilities that come from keywords (such as flying, double attack, vigilance, indestructible, etc.) among all your creatures. This means that even a simple creature with a specific ability can turn your entire army into an unstoppable force. The only downside is the single color of this card, being a white card only the deck will suffer from the weaknesses of white.
Strategy in deck building
Odric shines in decks that include creatures with key abilities and numerous equipment. Akroma’s Memorial is a must-have card to maximize its potential. Additionally, cards like Angel of Jubilation or Archangel of Thune or even keyword-filled cards like Zetalpa, Primal Dawn can provide powerful synergies with your army.
Thalia, Heretic Cathar
Color: White Key Ability: Taxation Features: Slows down opponents.
Thalia is one of the most annoying legendary creatures for your opponents. Thanks to its ability, all of your opponents’ nonbasic creatures and lands enter tapped, significantly slowing down their strategies. It’s an ideal card for those who like to play a stax deck or control the pace of the game. Here too we suffer the fact of the white monochromatic deck.
Strategy in deck building
A deck with Thalia as Commander focuses on cards that penalize aggressive players or those who rely on ramp. Winter Orb and Blind Obedience are perfect complements to his playstyle. It’s an excellent choice for mono-white decks with a focus on board control.

The Gitrog Monster
Colors: Golgari (Green, Black) Key Abilities: Land synergies. Features: Fishing motor.
The Gitrog Monster is one of the most powerful Golgari Commanders ever created. Its ability forces you to sacrifice a land every turn, but rewards you with an incredible draw engine every time a land ends up in the graveyard. This makes it ideal for decks that use landfall mechanics or that reclaim lands from the graveyard.
Strategy in deck building
A deck based on The Gitrog Monster can take advantage of cards like Life from the Loam or Crucible of Worlds to maximize value. Additionally, combos with Dakmor Salvage and Eternal Witness can create infinite loops. How can we not mention the terrifying Dark Depth, a land that transforms into a 20/20 with flying and indestructible, a card well known and loved by all landfall players. Gitrog is the perfect Commander for those who love complex and synergistic strategies.
This expansion celebrates the best of the Innistrad plane, and the selected legendary creatures not only embody the gothic and horror spirit of this world, but also offer incredible mechanics for the Commander format. Unmissable then in the new alternative versions showcase movie poster.
From Edgar Markov’s Vampires to Avacyn’s controlled destruction, each card brings with it a unique playstyle, suited to different preferences and levels of competition. Whether you want an aggressive, tribal, or synergistic deck, “Innistrad Remastered” offers amazing options for fans of the EDH format.
