Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka played the final match of his professional tennis career on Tuesday, losing 7-5, 7-6(2) to Czech Jiri Lehecka at the Swiss Indoors in Basel. The 41-year-old brought his 24-year career to a close in front of his home fans after announcing that 2026 would be his final season on the tour. Wawrinka leaves the sport with three major titles, 16 ATP titles and a career-high ranking of world No. 3.
Wawrinka’s Three Grand Slam Titles Against Nadal and Djokovic
Wawrinka won his first Grand Slam title at the 2014 Australian Open, defeating Rafael Nadal in the final to claim his maiden major. He followed that breakthrough with victories over Novak Djokovic in two more Grand Slam finals, winning the 2015 French Open and the 2016 US Open.
His success at Roland Garros in 2015 was particularly notable, as he defeated Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 to deny the Serbian a career Grand Slam at the time. A year later, Wawrinka beat Djokovic again in the US Open final, winning 6-7(1), 6-4, 7-5, 6-3.
