As the bustling tourist hub of Sauraha continues to expand, the original Tharu village that birthed the popular destination is facing an identity crisis. Once a quaint, traditional settlement, the old Sauraha is now a small enclave surrounded by the modern amenities of the new town.

To preserve their cultural heritage and capitalize on the growing tourism industry, the local community has initiated the “Chhatiya Street” project. The concept revolves around the iconic Tharu umbrella, traditionally used by farmers for sun protection. By showcasing the chhatiya and other traditional elements, the community aims to attract tourists and revive the old village’s charm.

The Tharu people, who form the majority of the old Sauraha population, are determined to preserve their art, culture, and culinary traditions. They plan to offer authentic Tharu cuisine, including dishes like chichhar, ghongi, duck, and fish, alongside cultural performances like Jhamta and Lathi dance.

To create a more immersive experience, the community is considering closing the Chhatiya Street to traffic for a few hours each week, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the Tharu culture.

The “Chhatiya Street” project is a significant step towards balancing tourism development with cultural preservation. By revitalizing the old village, the local community hopes to not only generate income but also safeguard their heritage for future generations.
