In a major development for Nepali cricket, the Finance Ministry has allocated Rs 50 million (approximately USD 400,000) towards the national team’s preparation for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Cricket Championship.
The announcement was made by Tanka Lal Ghising, Member-Secretary of the National Sports Council. He emphasized the significance of the tournament, stating, “The Nepali team is playing a big championship like the cricket world cup.” Ghising explained that the National Sports Council, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, had put in the recommendation for the funding to the Finance Ministry.
This financial support comes on the heels of assurances from Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who pledged that budgetary constraints would not hinder the Nepali team’s preparation for the World Cup, following their recent qualification.
Ghising has urged the Cricket Association of Nepal to take this preparation phase seriously and make the most of the allocated funds. Nepal secured its place in the World Cup by defeating the United Arab Emirates by eight wickets in the semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia Regional Qualifier in October-November 2023.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Cricket Championship is scheduled to take place in the USA and the West Indies from June 1. Nepal previously participated in the T20 World Cup Cricket Championship in 2014.
