In a heart-stopping match at Arnos Vale Stadium, Nepal’s hopes in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 were dashed as they lost to South Africa by a mere 1 run. This defeat not only marked the end of the match but also ended Nepal’s journey in the tournament, eliminating them from the race to the Super-8 stage.

Continuing their unbeaten streak, South Africa posted a total of 115/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Reeza Hendricks was the top scorer with 43 runs off 49 balls, while Tristan Stubbs added a quick 27* off 18 deliveries. Kushal Bhurtel was the standout bowler for Nepal, claiming four wickets for just 19 runs in his four overs. Dipendra Singh Airee also contributed significantly with the ball, taking 3/21.

In response, Nepal scored 114/7 in 20 overs, falling short by a single run. Aasif Sheikh top-scored with 42 runs off 49 balls, while Anil Kumar Sah added a brisk 27 off 24 balls. However, they couldn’t overcome the tight bowling from South Africa, with Tabraiz Shamsi taking four crucial wickets for 19 runs, earning him the Player of the Match accolade.

With this loss, Nepal’s standing in Group D remains bleak. They sit in fourth place with just 1 point from 3 matches, comprising 2 defeats and 1 draw. Their final group stage match against Bangladesh on Sunday holds little significance, as even a win would only elevate them to 3 points, insufficient for progression to the Super-8 stage.

South Africa, meanwhile, solidified their dominance in Group D, amassing 8 points from 4 matches. Bangladesh, with 4 points from 3 matches (2 wins and 1 loss), occupies the second spot. Had Nepal secured a victory against South Africa, they would have kept their Super-8 hopes alive with 4 points.

Despite the disappointing end, Nepal’s participation in the T20 World Cup has been a valuable experience, and they will look to finish their campaign on a high note against Bangladesh.
