Today marks the culmination of the Chhath festival, a significant religious observance dedicated to the Sun God. Devotees, known as Vratalu, will worship the setting sun this evening, offering prayers and Argha (a ritual offering). The festival concludes tomorrow morning with prayers to the rising sun after a night of fasting and vigil.
The government has declared a public holiday nationwide to honor this important occasion.
Kathmandu and Terai Basking in Chhath Festivities
The excitement of Chhath is palpable in the Terai Madhesh region, including the Kathmandu Valley. The capital city has prepared eight Chhath Ghats, strategically located in various wards. These sites have been adorned with decorations and enhanced with cleanliness and security measures.
In Janakpurdham, devotees gather at iconic water bodies like Gangasagar, Angraj Sagar, Dhanush Sagar, Dasharath Lake, and Gordhoi Pokhari. These serene lakes, beautifully decorated, serve as the perfect backdrop for saluting the celestial bodies.
Rural areas are no exception to the Chhath fervor. Ponds, reservoirs, and even wells are transformed into sacred sites. Devotees gather early morning or afternoon, armed with puja materials, to perform the rituals.
Political Leaders Join the Celebrations
The president, Vice President, and other dignitaries are expected to participate in the evening’s rituals, paying homage to the setting sun.
Chhath, traditionally celebrated in the Terai region, has gained popularity in the hills and mountains. This growing inclusivity fosters social harmony and unity.
It is believed that observing Chhath with utmost devotion brings blessings, prosperity, and the removal of obstacles.
On this auspicious occasion, leaders from various political parties, including the President, Vice President, and Prime Minister, have extended their heartfelt greetings.
