In a significant step towards addressing the lingering wounds of Nepal’s past, the National Assembly has unanimously approved the Transitional Justice bill without any amendments. This move paves the way for the bill to become law after receiving presidential assent.
The bill’s passage marks a crucial milestone in Nepal’s peace process, as it seeks to address the transitional justice issues that have plagued the country since the end of the decade-long Maoist insurgency. The legislation aims to provide justice for victims of the conflict and promote reconciliation.
During the National Assembly session, Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ajay Kumar Chaurasia presented the bill, which garnered widespread support from lawmakers across the political spectrum.
Several leaders emphasized the importance of this bill in ensuring justice for victims and promoting national unity. Krishna Prasad Sitaula, leader of the Nepali Congress, stressed the need for all political parties to work together to fulfill the resolutions for political, economic, social, and cultural changes. Similarly, National Assembly member Bam Dev Gautam highlighted the bill’s significance in ensuring justice for victims and advocated for a victim-centered approach.
Narayan Kaji Shrestha, leader of the Maoist Centre parliamentary party, acknowledged the political achievements of the Maoist armed struggle and urged for the institutionalization of these changes. Bhagwati Neupane, Chief Whip of the CPN-UML, called for cooperative efforts to complete the remaining tasks of the peace process and urged all political parties to unite in resolving transitional justice issues.
The unanimous approval of the Transitional Justice bill by the National Assembly is a positive development that signals a commitment to addressing the past and building a more just and peaceful future for Nepal.
