The Senior World Wrestling Championships 2026 in Astana, Kazakhstan, have been overshadowed by a controversial incident involving American wrestler Morgan Turner and Russia’s Elizaveta Smirnova. Turner was disqualified from their women’s 50kg round-of-16 bout after two eye pokes left Smirnova with a corneal injury, ending the American’s campaign at the tournament.

The incident has sparked debate among wrestling fans about athlete safety, prohibited actions and the punishment for dangerous conduct. While Smirnova was initially awarded the victory, the Russian wrestler was subsequently withdrawn from the competition after medical officials ruled that she could not continue. She was taken to the hospital right away and reportedly suffered a corneal injury.

What Happened Between Morgan Turner And Elizaveta Smirnova?

The incident occurred during the round-of-16 bout on October 27. Smirnova was leading when Turner narrowed the gap with a counter lift and an arm-bar move that earned exposure points. After the wrestlers returned to their feet, Turner made contact with Smirnova’s eye, leaving the Russian athlete in pain.
