A devastating landslide has claimed the lives of over 120 people in the Meppadi area of Wayanad district, Kerala. The disaster has also left more than 100 injured and an estimated 90 people missing. Rescue efforts are hampered by heavy rains and the challenging terrain.
The Indian government has deployed the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), army, and air force to assist in the rescue operation. However, the death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue teams continue to comb through the debris.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has requested the army’s help in constructing a temporary bridge to access the landslide site. The state has been experiencing torrential rains, with orange and yellow alerts issued for several regions.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid landslide-prone areas and remain vigilant.
