The historic Haribodhini Ekadashi Fair (Mela), which had been suspended for 24 years due to security concerns, is set to make a comeback this year. The fair, traditionally held on the banks of the Kaligandaki River at Nirayaghat, will resume on Karthik 27th.

The fair, once a major cultural and religious event, drew thousands of devotees. The tradition of carrying illuminated torches in processions to the riverbank was a major highlight. However, the 2057 B.S. security challenges forced the suspension of the event.

A dedicated committee, the Haribodhini Ekadashi Mela Protection Committee, has been formed to oversee the revival of the fair. Ramesh Rajbhandari, the committee’s chairman, confirmed that preparations are underway to restore the event to its former glory.

The committee plans to recreate the traditional atmosphere, including the construction of a massive 180-meter-long pylon made of bamboo and sacred grass. The pylon will be erected in a Vedic manner, symbolizing the spiritual significance of the event.

To ensure a smooth and successful fair, various sub-committees have been formed to handle specific tasks, such as torch processions, devotional music, financial management, and cleanliness.

Local business leaders also see the fair as an opportunity to boost tourism in the region. Naresh Kandel, President of the Baglung Chamber of Commerce and Industry, believes that the revival of the fair will help connect the region’s rich cultural heritage with modern tourism.

By combining religious devotion, cultural traditions, and local economic activities, the Haribodhini Ekadashi Fair promises to be a significant event for the people of Baglung and beyond.
