Germany Top Spot

Germany, buoyed by a last-gasp equalizer from Niclas Fullkrug, secured the top spot in Group A of Euro 2024 after a thrilling 1-1 draw against Switzerland on Sunday.

The Germans, already assured of a place in the knockout stages following victories in their opening two games, found themselves trailing after Dan Ndoye’s strike in the 28th minute. However, Fullkrug emerged as the hero deep into injury time, snatching a point and the group win for the hosts.

Germany finish the group stage with a perfect record of seven points from three matches. Switzerland, despite the late disappointment, also progress to the knockout stages as runners-up with five points, having previously defeated Hungary and drawn with Scotland.

Speaking of Hungary, they salvaged some pride with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Scotland in the group’s other fixture. Kevin Csoboth’s winner in the 10th minute of stoppage time secured their first points of the tournament after two defeats.

This result keeps Hungary’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive, with a chance of qualifying as one of the four best third-placed teams. However, their fate hinges on the outcome of remaining matches in other groups.

Scotland, meanwhile, become the first team to be eliminated from Euro 2024, mustering only one point from their three games. They lost their opening encounter to Germany and drew with Switzerland in their second outing.
