Dharan: A six-hour-long negotiation between protesting political parties and Dharan Mayor Harka Sampang has successfully resolved the water tariff hike issue that sparked widespread protests in the city.
The parties, which had been staging protests for the past three weeks, have agreed to suspend their demonstrations following the agreement reached on Sunday. A detailed press conference is scheduled for Monday to outline the terms of the agreement.
Key points of the agreement include the immediate withdrawal of the water tariff hike, acceptance of the High Court’s decision regarding the water supply board’s completeness, and the publication of the board’s accounts within seven days.
The decision comes after intense negotiations that extended into the night. The talks involved a range of political representatives, including Mayor Harka Sampang, Deputy Mayor Aindra Bikram Begha, and representatives from various political parties.
The water tariff hike, which saw an increase of 9,900 percent, had triggered widespread public outcry and protests. The political parties involved had staged various forms of protest, including sit-ins and office lockouts, to demand a rollback of the decision.
With the agreement in place, the situation is expected to return to normalcy in Dharan.
