Kritika Marasini, a talented member of Nepal’s national women’s cricket team, has departed Nepal to settle in Australia. The decision comes following her recent marriage.
Kritika, the only daughter of Kamal Marasini, left for Australia on Monday. Born on May 30, 2004, she has made significant contributions to Nepal’s cricket scene, serving as captain of the Under-19 women’s cricket team in 2022.
Her father expressed mixed emotions about her departure, stating that while they did not want her to leave, the opportunities available in Australia made it a difficult decision.
The Nepal Cricket Association (CAN) recognized Kritika’s potential and appointed her as the U-19 captain two years ago. She led the team in the ICC U-19 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in 2022 and made her T20 international debut in May 2023.
Kritika’s departure has disappointed many sports enthusiasts in Nepal. She was a promising player with a bright future ahead, and her decision to leave the country for Australia has raised questions about the challenges faced by athletes in Nepal.
Professor Rishiram Bhusal has criticized the trend of international-level players migrating abroad for work, questioning its benefits for the country. He emphasized that such departures cast a shadow of disappointment on a nation that heavily relies on remittances from its youth.
Kritika’s father expressed his sadness at saying goodbye to his daughter but wished her well in Australia. He acknowledged that his daughter’s departure was a common occurrence for many Nepali athletes who go abroad without receiving proper recognition from their country.
Sanjay Gurung, former cricketer and president of the Lumbini Cricket Association, confirmed that he had heard about Kritika’s departure but was not given official information. He expressed his disappointment as he had observed her progress and potential. Gurung speculated that her husband’s residence in Australia may have influenced her decision to relocate.
