Copa America favorites Brazil were left frustrated in their opening match of the 2024 tournament, playing to a disappointing 0-0 draw against a resolute Costa Rica side on Tuesday.

Despite dominating possession and territory, the Seleção struggled to breach Costa Rica’s well-organized defense, managing only a handful of shots on target. This result leaves Brazil with a mountain to climb in Group D, where Colombia currently sits atop the table after their 2-1 victory over Paraguay.

Brazil’s attacking prowess, featuring the likes of Neymar and Vinicius Jr., was kept at bay by a determined Costa Rican backline. The five-man defense effectively shut down space and limited Brazil’s creativity, forcing them to resort to long-range efforts that rarely troubled the goalkeeper.

With Colombia securing three points in their opening match, the pressure is now on for Brazil to bounce back. Their next game will be crucial in determining their fate in the group stage. Coach Tite will need to find a way to unlock Costa Rica’s defense and get his team firing on all cylinders if they want to avoid an early Copa America exit.
