Bhaktapur, Nepal – A vibrant and traditional Bhairav dance performance captivated residents of Madhyapur Thimi on Friday night. The dance is a customary part of the Bhairav Jatra, during which villagers are treated to a feast.
The performance, which began on Friday evening, continued throughout Tuesday night, drawing large crowds from neighboring areas like Laiku and Balkumari Mandir.
The dance itself is a unique blend of tradition and ritual. Dancers, wearing masks known as “mukundo,” perform a series of intricate movements inspired by Tantric lore. According to legend, Bhairav, Kumari, and Japu Goko enter the dancers’ bodies during the performance, warding off evil spirits and ensuring the well-being of the community.
It is believed that the tradition of Bhairav dance in Thimi originated centuries ago as a means to combat a plague of ghosts and evil spirits. The dance’s continued popularity today is a testament to its cultural significance and enduring appeal.
