Tensions within the retro gaming community have escalated sharply as the core development team behind Azahar, a prominent open-source Nintendo 3DS emulator, announced it will officially terminate support for all devices produced by hardware manufacturer Anbernic. The abrupt policy shift follows the release of promotional marketing material by Anbernic showcasing an unofficial modified variant of the software known as “Azahar Plus.” Open-source maintainers made it clear that any troubleshooting requests, bug reports, or performance inquiries originating from Anbernic hardware will be entirely ignored moving forward.
The controversy centers around the unauthorised modification and distribution of software derivatives without explicit consent from the original development collective. Industry analysts noted that hardware manufacturers utilising open-source emulation tools often tread on delicate legal ground, particularly as intellectual property holders increase scrutiny over portable devices capable of running legacy console libraries. By publicly disassociating from Anbernic’s promotional campaigns, Azahar maintainers sought to establish a definitive firewall between their independent development work and commercial hardware marketing.
