Kathmandu: Famous artist and actor Suleman Shankar, widely known by his stage name Iku, has been arrested in Hattigauda, Kathmandu on accusations of defrauding several individuals by promising them artist visas to Western countries.
The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) apprehended Shankar following multiple complaints of a sophisticated visa scam. Superintendent of Police (SP) Hobindra Bogati confirmed the arrest, explaining that Shankar had allegedly lured his victims by offering them opportunities to travel to countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and several European nations on artist visas, specifically for participation in Nepali cultural events.
According to the CIB, Shankar misled his clients by promising not only cultural participation abroad but also the prospect of lucrative jobs and stable income in these Western countries. As part of the scam, he reportedly convinced individuals to pay between Rs 1.5 million and Rs 2 million per person, asking them to transfer the funds to his company, SMS Films Pvt Ltd.
However, after paying the hefty sums, the victims were unable to travel as promised, prompting them to approach law enforcement for help. The CIB launched an investigation, eventually leading to Shankar’s arrest.
The case has sent shockwaves through Kathmanduโs artistic and cultural community, as Shankar, a respected figure known for his contributions to Nepali cinema, now faces serious criminal charges. Authorities are currently investigating further to uncover the full extent of the fraud and identify any additional victims.
The CIB is urging anyone who has been defrauded in similar circumstances to come forward. Meanwhile, Suleman Shankar remains in custody as the investigation continues.
