As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, a new Resident Evil movie is in the works with director Zach Cregger hired to write and direct the film.

As we reported in our previous news, Screen Gems and Constantin Films have an existing contract with Capcom, which allows them to maintain the film rights to the Resident Evil brand. However, to prevent these rights from lapsing, they will necessarily have to release a new Resident Evil film within five fiscal years.

Given this contractual obligation, the next Resident Evil film will necessarily arrive in theaters before the end of fiscal 2026. Screen Gems and Constantin Films respectively distributed and produced Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, released in fiscal 2021 , and the five fiscal years will expire in 2026.

These details were reported by the well-known insider AestheticGamer (aka Dusk Golem), who also anticipated that the director of this new project would be Zach Cregger, director of the 2022 film Barbarian.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this reboot is described as a film that will bring the franchise back to its horror roots and be more faithful to the original titles. The most recent adaptation, namely the aforementioned Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City in 2021, attempted to adapt the first two chapters of the saga into a single film, however obtaining poor response from critics and the public.

Furthermore, considering that the six Resident Evil films starring Milla Jovovich have distanced themselves considerably from the atmosphere of the Capcom titles, to date, there has not been a live-action Resident Evil film that has truly captured the spirit of video games.

The report mentioned two studios in the process of grabbing the rights to the franchise, namely Warner Bros. and Netflix. The latter previously produced a live-action Resident Evil series starring Lance Reddick, which however was canceled after just one season. Apparently Warner Bros. would have an advantage, given that it has acquired the rights to Weapons, a film directed by Cregger.
